Technical Standards
We believe that truly elegant websites adhere to certain standards for the web. Whenever possible, we make sure our sites adhere to the recommendations and guidelines of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI).
When you use these standards, the result is:
- Lower development costs
- Sites that can be updated and maintained efficiently, and that can grow easily as time passes
- Pages that are device independant, meaning that any web application
can understand the website, including:
- All browsers on all platforms
- Wireless devices (such as cell phones and PDAs)
- Search engine robots (called "spiders")
- Screen readers (special browsers used by people who are visually impaired to read screens of text out loud)
- Shorter download times
- Increased user-friendliness
How do we achieve these goals?
- XHTML to structure web pages.
- CSS to apply layout and style to web pages.
- JavaScript and Flash to provide emphasis and appeal — used sparingly and only for show, and never for critical functionality without which a site or page would not work.
- PHP/mySQL/Smarty to build dynamic, object-oriented, templated web applications.
